Chapter 6

My first night at Marlo’s home I spent locked away in his theater, relaxing and watching movie after movie on his big screen. I raided his refrigerator like a kid, then took an hour-long soak in his Jacuzzi tub while taking shots of Cîroc. I slipped on one of the plush bathrobes from his closet, then walked around his home with my glass in hand, like I was some kind of boss.

Once I was good and buzzed, I slipped under the covers of the king-sized bed in one of the guestrooms, then rolled my naked ass back and forth across what I guessed had to be at least 1,000-thread-count sheets, until I finally dozed off. The next morning, I felt like a king who’d finally gotten a well-deserved rest.

Not only had Marlo entrusted his home to me, but he’d also left his car, deciding to take a rental out of town instead. “Be good to her,” he’d said, referring to his vehicle. “Treat her like the queen she is.”

I’d laughed at his instructions, but I definitely understood where he was coming from. I felt the same way about my baby. Nonetheless, it didn’t stop me from jumping in behind the wheel and taking his car out for a joy ride. I couldn’t lie; the looks of admiration and the turning heads I got stroked my ego. I now understood why Marlo was caught up in the temporary fame that luxury had to offer.

I was sitting at a red light at the intersection of University Drive and Jordan Lane when I saw a carload of females pull up. I cranked up the radio and casually let the top down, pretending not to notice them watching me.

The driver of the car edged up, almost going over the white line, letting me know they wanted my attention.

I slowly turned my head, looking in their direction, only to realize that Santana herself was sitting in the passenger seat. This city is too damn small! I thought, shaking my head.

She sat up, stared at me, then said something to the driver.

The woman looked over and smiled. The passenger-side window crept down as the light turned green.

I sped off, burning rubber to leave them behind in their Kia Sorento. In my rearview mirror, I saw the car behind me, flashing its lights. I erupted in laughter, weaving in and out of traffic. “Five…four…three…two…” I counted aloud, waiting for my phone to ring.

A second later, it did.

“Yeah?” I answered.

“Did I just see you on University Drive?” Santana asked immediately.

“Yeah.”

“Didn’t you see me trying to talk to you, Ty?” She sounded pissed off, angry that I hadn’t acknowledged her.

“Like I told you, we don’t have anything to talk about,” I reminded her.

“Ty, why are you trippin’? I didn’t know you worked at the carwash, and look, I don’t care that you took ol’ boy’s money, if you did take it. I mean, he’s a nobody.”

“He must be somebody.” I laughed. “You were all up on him, lettin’ him push the car I bought.
